Valley Park Library and The Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation Awarded 2023 Urban Design Awards
Valley Park Library and The Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation have been awarded a 2023 Urban Design Award for the City of Hamilton, presented yesterday evening at Joyce Gallery at Mohawk College. The Urban Design and Architecture Awards recognize and celebrate excellence in the design of Hamilton’s urban environment.
Having opened in 2022, Valley Park Library Branch rose from the fifteenth to the third most used space amongst the Hamilton Public Library Branches, drawing in 171,000 visitors with its new expanded space The library expansion features extensive upgrades within the facility to reinvent it as a sustainable, upgraded reflection of its vibrant community.
Valley Park Library received the Urban Design Award for Excellence in Public Buildings. This award marks another milestone for the project, after receiving LEED Gold Certification in September.
The Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation at Mohawk College incorporates high-capacity teaching spaces grouped together around a social hub atrium, converging to allow the flow of students to interact around a café, informal lounge spaces and more private study areas. The laboratories will be flexible and modular, allowing them to develop over time – in tune with advancing technology. Additionally, the laboratories will engage industry leading companies for innovative partnerships to harness collaboration between students and industry.
The Joyce Centre was one of the first in Canada to earn a Zero Carbon Building Certification and became the first in the Country to earn certification for both design and performance.
The Joyce Centre was awarded the Urban Design Chief Planner Award, adding it to an impressive list of awards including a 2019 RAIC Award of Excellence, 2018 Rethinking Future Awards.
