Bringing Refined Recreation and Leisure in Toronto

Hamilton, ON, April 4, 2024 – mcCallumSather announces the completion of its latest project, an upscale bowling alley for The Ballroom Bowl, in the Yorkville district of Toronto. The project is designed to be a sophisticated take on a traditional bowling ally, thoughtfully elevating this unique destination.

With a direct connection to Yonge St and Yonge/Bloor Subway Station, patrons are greeted by a wood feature ceiling with integrated lighting. The city collage wall graphic, designed by mcCallumSather’s project designer, Henry Dowling, captures Toronto’s vibrancy, with several nods to its neighbouring city, Hamilton.

After descending the escalators, guests are led into the venue by changing, multicoloured, light-up signage.

We aimed to create an immersive space that seamlessly blends luxury and meticulous craftsmanship, responding to the unique character of the venue and the client’s vision,” describes Liz Gabaldo, Interior Design Lead and Senior Associate at mcCallumSather.

The lounge area offers an open kitchen view and curved cave-like acoustic control. A bar with concealed TVs, walnut and brass detailing, sits beside the dining area with both booth and table seating, feature lighting pendants and a 3-sided water vapour fireplace. The VIP area integrates private bowling lanes, elevated millwork features, leather couch seating, and full-screen TVs.

The adaptive reuse of the space, formerly the McEwan grocery store, retained the former washroom rough-ins, a significant portion of the existing commercial kitchen and back-of-house areas, as well as the existing concrete floor and columns, some fixtures, and glazing, all adding to the sustainability of the design choices. Back-of-house admin areas were repurposed for reuse by Ballroom staff, minimizing demolition.

The Ballroom Bowl, renowned for its flagship location in the entertainment district, marks a milestone with the opening of its second venue in the heart of Yorkville. The Ballroom Bowl Yorkville promises to become a destination for dining, leisure, and entertainment.

mcCallumSather’s attention to detail and understanding of our vision were exceptional. The design result was exactly what we had in mind – a space that seamlessly blends sophistication with an inviting atmosphere, creating the perfect setting for our guests to enjoy. Their expertise truly brought our concept to life.” – Paul Donato, Owner of The Ballroom Bowl.

The Ballroom Bowl Yorkville was led by XGC Consulting Inc. for Construction, mcCallumSather for Architecture and Interior Design, Mantecon for Structural, Mechanical and Electrical, MMP for Civil, and Vortex Fire Consulting for Code.
