Uquutaq Society

IPD Fire Hall & Affordable Housing Development

Nunavut is facing one of the most urgent housing challenges in the country. In Iqaluit, where costs are high, supply is limited, and construction is complex, many residents remain without access to safe, stable housing. For younger populations in particular, affordability continues to erode, while the demand for supportive and transitional housing grows. Uquutaq Society is working to change that. Their goal is to reshape the housing continuum in the North, expanding access to low-barrier shelter, supportive housing, and the services that help people move toward long-term stability.

The Butler Building, a 32-unit supportive housing project in downtown Iqaluit, is a key part of that vision, providing homes and shared spaces, and support in a community where these resources are critically needed. The single-room units are paired with shared amenities including a communal kitchen, laundry facilities, multi-use programming spaces, and staff offices, ensuring residents have access to both independence and on-site support. Located in downtown Iqaluit, the project connects residents to essential services while reinforcing a sense of belonging within the broader community.

Recognizing the logistical, climatic and environmental realities of building in the Arctic, the team prioritized a hybrid structural system paired with a high-performance building envelope designed to withstand extreme cold, wind, and snow loads, creating durable, long-lasting housing that supports community resilience.
