The slender six-storey design of a new deeply affordable housing building, squeezed into a tight lot on Barton Street East in Hamilton, distinguishes it from the squat, inner-city landscape.
But a backstory driven by innovation, partnership and reconciliation also makes the modular building stand out from the crowd, St. Matthew’s House said.
“This is to show you what we can do,” executive director Renée Wetselaar told a crowd of supporters gathered Tuesday to celebrate the opening of 412 Barton St. E. two years after a groundbreaking event.
Starting in January, St. Matt’s plans to welcome older Indigenous and Black tenants who have struggled with homelessness to the 15 bachelor apartments built next door to the agency’s daycare centre and offices.
