KPL Southwest Branch: Shaped by Community Voices

The Southwest Community Branch of the Kitchener Public Library began with a clear vision: to create a library that feels like it truly belongs to its community. From the start, the design process was driven by collaboration and by listening to residents, to community partners, and to Indigenous Land Right Holders.

Amanda describes the Southwest Community Branch as a space designed to evolve alongside the community. Every program, every feature, and every gathering space is a response to what she and her team heard during those early conversations. A key part of that vision was creating a space where everyone feels welcome, with flexible, accessible, and inclusive design decisions that reflect the diversity of the people it serves.

“We want this to be a place where the community co-creates. Where people come together to share stories, learn from each other, and build connections that strengthen the neighbourhood.”

Her experience stands as a powerful example of how collaboration between a client, community, and design team can result in a library that is deeply meaningful and relevant.

The KPL Southwest Community Branch is ultimately a story of partnership and trust; a place shaped by the voices of its community and built to grow with them, inspiring connection, discovery, and a true sense of belonging for generations to come.
