Kitchener, ON
710 Fredrick St. Modular Accessory Dwelling Unit
Opportunity
This experimental project for a factory-built modular accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was conceived in response to the growing shortage of affordable housing locally in Waterloo Region and across the country. After significant research and development, the final design is a economical, energy efficient, fully barrier free accessible 2-bedroom rental unit that offers the autonomy of a detached home in a compact apartment-sized form.
Response
The structural steel framed unit was fully constructed in a factory environment in Kitchener and then shipped to the site in two pieces where it was then craned over an existing residence and dropped into place on concrete piers in the rear yard of the property. The modular approach allowed for overlap of fabrication and field work to deliver the project in a more efficient way.
