Hauser Furniture – Burlington
Our team worked with Hauser Furniture, a Canadian patio and outdoor furniture company, to reimagine this 10,118 square-foot, derelict building, designing a chic, modern and functional space that rang true to the Hauser brand. Beginning our collaboration in early 2019, mcCallumSather’s architecture and mechanical engineering teams provided design, mechanical engineering and construction administration services to Hauser’s newest store. With a total project budget of $1.3M, their new store has transformed the existing building with a modern, industrial design, turning it into a retail node for Hauser Furniture.
The existing building at 1273 Plains Rd. W. sits in a prime, roadside location and has seen various uses over the last several years. The original space was uninviting, clad with stucco on the front façade while exhibiting its aged systems. Our solution involved updating and re-designing the building’s aged insulation system with spray foam and metal paneling, enabling Hauser’s elegant and classic style to shine through.
The store features floor to ceiling windows, allowing natural light to flood through the space. The interiors are minimalist, providing a blank canvas for the furniture to be on display. The natural wood paneling behind the reception desk speaks to the Hauser brand on a fundamental level. Sections of the original wooden floor were salvaged whilst others were replaced with polished concrete flooring offering a high gloss, reflective finish. Outside, a furniture display space is planned for the existing courtyard area.
Our team successfully worked with several authorities while designing the facility. Beyond submitting for zoning variance, we also worked with planners, site engineers, and the head of the City of Burlington’s planning department to overcome challenges within this project. As the site is in a conservation regulated area, encircled by the Royal Botanical Gardens, we worked closely with Conversation Halton to ensure the project was sensitive to its natural surroundings.
